State of the Channel: December 2016

For those who care, these State of the Channel posts will be a monthly update on what is happening with the channel. I'll post tentative schedules and news that might not make it into the video proper. I think it will be a great way to keep you guys updated on what is going on with me and hear some feedback from yourself as well.

So without further ado...

December 2016 Schedule

Week of 12/4: Trope Talk: Pin the Zion on the Map
Week of 12/11: Plausibility Review: The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick
Week of 12/18: Map? OR Thoughts on?
Week of 12/25: Thoughts on Its A Wonderful Life

I want to stress again that this is a tentative schedule and is subject to change at a moments notice. As many of you know, making videos is not my day job. Thus if I can't find the time to make any of the videos above I will either do something else or skip a week entirely.

That said, I am looking forward to this month. Trope Talk will return, The Man in the High Castle season 2 on Amazon premiers and I'm going to review one of the most famous Christmas movies of all time. Still not sure what I am doing the week of 12/18, but I'm sure I'll figure something out.

No More Link Sharing on AlternateHistory.com

For any of you who also looking for updates on the channel by following our official thread on AlternateHistory.com...you can't anymore. Its been shut down by the mods. I'm not angry, I figured it would happen sooner or later. In fact I'm surprised it took this long since if you count the thread created for my old blog I've been promoting my writing and videos like this for FIVE years and only now has anyone taken issue with it.

Again I'm not angry. I understand how difficult it can be for Ian and the other mods to moderate a forum, having done something similar myself on a number of occasions. That said, it does mean that I won't be able to promote the channel on that forum anymore so please keep that in mind.

Anthology Review: What Ifs of Jewish History: From Abraham to Zionism edited by Gavriel D. Rosenfeld

Jewish counterfactual history anyone? Check out my review of What Ifs of Jewish History: From Abraham to Zionism edited by Gavriel D. Rosenfeld now on Amazing Stories. And when you get the chance, check out Gavriel's blog: The Counterfactual History Review. Its a great site for the scholarly side of alternate history.

Is "A Lesser United States" Plausible?

O hey, I made a video regarding another famous alternate history map. Check it out below:
And if you watched the video, here is some extra speculation for all of you who actually follow this blog:
  • If the United States is smaller due to not expanding into the southwest (and maybe even an earlier Civil War resulting in a victorious Confederacy) British Columbia may have gone solo and not join with Canada, much like Newfoundland almost did.
  • A potentially larger Mexico that never fought the United States would be better off financially and politically and would probably never be invaded by France.
  • A smaller, less expansionist United States would probably be less interested in the Pacific. Changes could include an independent Hawaii, but they may also be absorbed by another power like Britain.
Do you agree? Let me know in the comments.

Welcome!

Hello everyone, I'm Matt Mitrovich, the alternate historian. Since 2011, I have been discussing and promoting alternate history wherever I go in the real and digital world. I am the host of The Alternate Historian channel on YouTube, the founder of the now defunct Alternate History Weekly Update, a blogger for Amazing Stories, a volunteer interviewer for SFFWorld and (perhaps my most cherished title) a Sidewise Awards for Alternate History judge.

On top of all that, I am an author of numerous short stories and the Historical Novel Society's Alternate History Guide. I will (hopefully) be publishing my essay on the online alternate history community titled "Warping History: An Overview of Fans and Creators of Alternate History in the Internet Age", which I originally presented at the 2015 Sideways in Time Conference at the University of Liverpool. Plus I've been interviewed and published countless times to the point that it would take too long to list them all.

This is to be my new official site where I will promote my videos and writings, keep you updated on my many projects and share my thoughts about alternate history, speculative fiction and the world in general. Its a new beginning for me and I hope you can join me by following this site. Don't forget you can also follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and DeviantArt. If you become my patron on Patreon you will get access to my videos early and even get the chance to tell me what to create.

I look forward to changing history with all of you.
