- If the United States is smaller due to not expanding into the southwest (and maybe even an earlier Civil War resulting in a victorious Confederacy) British Columbia may have gone solo and not join with Canada, much like Newfoundland almost did.
- A potentially larger Mexico that never fought the United States would be better off financially and politically and would probably never be invaded by France.
- A smaller, less expansionist United States would probably be less interested in the Pacific. Changes could include an independent Hawaii, but they may also be absorbed by another power like Britain.
